Happy New Year 2007 & Dojo New Year Opening Training

Dear Ken Wa Kan Kenshis,

I wish you all had a wonderful Christmas holiday.

Since our program is growing steadily & healthy, and everyone has been working so hard at basis in the past 3~4 months, I will have some changes for our training since 2007. Which means you all are ready for higher levels of training at Kendo. Congratulations!

Meanwhile, our new zekkens are ready, and I will receive them by next Tuesday or Wednesday, so please do your best to join our Dojo New Year Opening Training on Tuesday (1/2/2007) and Thursday (1/4/2007), and receive your new zekkens.

Again, Kendo (all martial arts) training is a long term study, don't give up/keep continuing is the only way you may discover its beauty.

Happy New Year 2007

Vincent

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Dear Ken Wa Kan kenshi(s),

I wish you all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year of 2007.

Thank you for your support at our Kendo "program" in the past 5 months. Our "program" is growing very steadily and healthy because of your enthusiasm participted and input. I wish we all can learn and discover the amazing Kendo world together as much and as long as we can.

Now, we have our official dojo name which is Ken Wa Kan as you may have realized at the beginning of this e-mail. We are going to have this name for our "dojo" and register under the federations of AUSKF/ EUSKF.

The full name will be: Ken Wa Kan Kendo Dojo as be written by kanji.

December 21st, Thursday, will be our officially last class of this year, 2006, but feel free to come to practice on 28th, Thursday.

Our first class of 2007 will be on January 2nd, Tuesday. Normally, each dojo will have a "special" training at the first class of each year... Since some of you can't make it on 1/2/07, Tuesday, so, we will have TWO special training for our dojo at the first two classes of 2007 when are 1/2 and 1/4.

Again, thank you for your support for our dojo, and wish we may keep continuing and working hard together to welcome the New Year of 2007.

Best wishes,

Vincent Lan

Kendo Rank

Kendo Rank
There are no outward signs of rank such as a “belt” as in other kinds of martial arts. Kendo follows the ranking system as follows:

Kyu
Kyu is the entry level. Students are graded from 6th to 1st. 1st-kyu is the highest. They are called ro-kyu (6), go-kyu (5), yon-kyu (4), san-kyu (3), ni-kyu (2), i-kyu (1) respectively.

Dan
Follow by successfully passed the i-kyu test, more advanced grades are loosely identified as “black belt” in general, from 1st-dan to 10th-dan. 10th-dan is the highest rank. They are sho-dan (1), ni-dan (2), san-dan (3), yon-dan (4), go-dan (5), roku-dan (6), nana-dan (7), hachi-dan (8), kyu-dan (9), ju-dan (10).

In the real life, there is no one to judge tests for kyu-dan and ju-dan levels and therefore, hachi-dan (8) is the highest obtainable rank nowadays.
