Welcome Shozo Kato Sensei to visit Ken Wa Kan on Friday, July 24th (7:30~9:30 PM)

It's our honor and pleasure to welcome Shozo Kato Sensei, Kendo 7th Dan Kyoshi, Iaido 7th Dan Kyoshi, to visit Ken Wa Kan on July 24th, Friday, 7:30~9:30 PM.

Kato sensei is the head instructor of Shidogakuin, and one of the highest ranking U.S. practitioners of both Kendo and Iaido. Kato sensei also was the head coach for Team-USA at 10th and 11th World Kendo Championships.

If you are planning to attend the practice, please arrive dojo, dress well, and be ready by 7:20 PM. Thank you.

2009 Summer kendo events updated

There are kendo seminar, camp, party, and schedules updated for the next few weeks. Please take a look and try to attend if you are available, and let me know if you have any question. Wish you have a nice July 4th weekend.

  • 8/1, Saturday: SEUSKF Kendo Seminar and Promotion Test held by Baltimore-Annapolis Kendo Club
  • 8/4 ~ 8/9: Shidogakuin Summer Camp at Bryn Mawr College (You don't need to attend all 6 days, neither to stay on campus- living and dinner cost can be deducted.)

  • 7/11, Saturday: Kelly's summer party at Hershey
  • Reiun Kenkai/Hershey/Hummelstown Dojo: 7/4 at Hummelstown church; 7/11 (PSU Hershey Medical Center Gym) & 7/18 temporally at YMCA Harrisburg. Please contact Bruce or Jason for more details.
  • Kyu Do Kan at Scarsdale, New York is closed for two months. It will reopen after Labor Day weekend. Kyu Do Kan at Fort Lee, New Jersey still opens for practice through out the summer.

Kendo demonstration at Japanese Summer Festival, Japanese House & Tea Garden tomorrow

Tomorrow, we are going to have a Kendo demonstration at Japanese Summer Festival, Japanese House & Garden, Philadelphia Fairmount Park held by Shofuso and the Japanese Association of Greater Philadelphia on Saturday, June 20th, 2009.

We plan get together at 12:30, and the demo shall start at around 1:10 PM or 1:15 PM.

2009 Shidogakuin Summer Kendo Camp

Please see the package below for the 17th Annual Shidogakuin Summer Kendo Camp at Bryn Mawr College, PA.

Ms. Bella Church who is the camp and Shidogakuin manager told me the fee will be less if any KWK students would like to attend and will NOT stay on campus. Let me know if you are considering to attend, or have any question.

The last two days of the camp will have a tournament and rank testing.

2nd Annual Goodwill Invitational Kendo Tournament will be held on April 18th, 2009

Ken Wa Kan and Princeton Kendo & Iaido Club will hold the 2nd Annual Goodwill Invitational Kendo Tournament on April 18th, 2009, Saturday from 1:00 to 5:30 PM, and Godo Keiko (Open floor practice) will be followed.

This tournament will be held at the Carpenter Sports Building, Gym-1, University of Delaware. 60 North College Ave., Newark, DE 19711.

We're saddened over the loss of a great martial arts teacher.

We are sorry and saddened to share with you that grandmaster Thomas J. Wilson, 8th dan taekwondo black belt and 5th dan hapkido black belt, owner of the Black Belt Academy passed away on March 7, Saturday morning.

Master Wilson was a life fighter, and had been battling leukemia since autumn of 2007. He is in a better place now and will be truly missed by all.

Please join with us to include Master Wilson and his beloved wife and children in our prayers.

Thomas J. Wilson will have a Christian burial service at St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church (Route 100 in Upper Uwchlan) on Thursday, March 19 at 10:00am. A celebration of his life will resume following the church service at Ludwigs Corner's Griffith Hall (fire hall). Participants will have the chance to publicly share something about Master Wilson at that time if they so choose. If you wish to lend a hand, please bring a dessert to share.

For Families of the Black Belt Academy: On Friday, March 20 at 7 pm, a special memorial candlelight service will be held at the dojang for those who participate in the childrens' classes. The children and their parents are invited to attend. Classes will resume on Saturday.
