Holiday schedules and Princeton Yang Sensei's New Year's party

Few reminders before the holidays:

  • Ken Wa Kan West Chester remains open for practice on Tuesdays of Dec. 22 and Dec. 29. The class on Monday, Dec. 28 in Delaware is still pending.
  • Ken Wa Kan 2010 New Year's official opening class is on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010. Please attend! (Note: Dojo will be opened for practice on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010.)
  • David Yang sensei from Princeton Kendo and Iaido Dojo invites us to his New Year's party. Please let me know or contact him if you are planning to attend. Cancellation- Tonight's seminar with Kato sensei and Church sensei

Due to snow storm warning in the area from this evening to tomorrow, tonight's seminar with Shozo Kato sensei and Bella Church sensei has been canceled.

The seminar has been re-scheduled to Friday, January 15th, 2010.

Welcome Shozo Kato Sensei to visit Ken Wa Kan on 12/18 Firday

There are a couple of updates:

On 12/17, Thursday (8:00~9:30 PM)

It's our last official class of 2009 before the holidays. Please come and have a good kendo time with everyone. Dojo will still open for practice on Tuesdays of 12/22 and 12/29. Welcome to join with me if you are in town. (NO CLASS on Thursdays of 12/24 and 12/31).

Ken Wa Kan end of the year 2009 class schedules

Ken Wa Kan end of the year 2009 class schedules:

  • West Chester: Last official class is on 12/17 Thursday, but the dojo will still be opened for practice on 12/22 Tuesday and 12/29 Tuesday.

  • Delaware: Last official class is on 12/21 Moday, but I will still go to the class on 12/28 Moday if any of you plan to be there.

  • PSU: Please check with Bruce or PSU Kendo Club's website for more details.

  • There is NO class on 11/26 Thursday Thanksgiving, 12/24 Thursday Christmas Eve, and 12/31/2009 Thursday New Year's Eve.

  • 2010 Ken Wa Kan New Year Opening Class (at West Chester) is on 1/7/2010 Thursday.

Rex Hung Sensei will visit Ken Wa Kan

Rex Hung sensei from Ken Ze, NY will visit Ken Wa Kan on 11/19, this Thursday in class. After class, we will move to a local restaurant and have an easy farewell dinner with him. Please join us.

Misao Grivas, 6th dan will be leading the Godogeiko. All women are allowed to participate regardless of federation, dojo, rank etc. Let's enjoy practicing Kendo together.

2009 EUSKF Annual Kendo Shinsa (Promotion Test)

When: Saturday, November 14, 2009

Where: Greenville Elementary School Gym, 100 Glendale Rd., Scarsdale, NY 10583

Time to Gather: 12:30 P.M.

Shinsa to Begin: 1:00 P.M.

Shinsa Fee: $30.00 per applicant

For the Shinsa fee please make check payable to EUSKF and submit it, along with the application form (provided below) properly filled-in, to Ishizuka-sensei no later than a week before the day of Shinsa (by November 7, 2009), or to Han-sensei on the day of Shinsa if you had a good reason why you could not hand it in before that date.

Those who pass the Shinsa must pay the Menjo fee shown below, in order to receive Certificate issued by AUSKF. The check should be made (after announcement of your advanced grade) payable to EUSKF, and submit it to Ishizuka-sensei, or to the head instructor of your dojo.

Masashi Shikai sensei (kendo kyoshi 7th Dan) will be with us on the day of the shinsa and we will have a joint kendo practice together with him after shinsa. There is no extra fee to pay for the practice and everybody is welcome to participate. Those people who do not take test, but want to join kendo practice should come to Greenville Elementary School gym by 3:30 pm. Most of sitting judge sensei are going to participate in this joint kendo practice.

1 Dan: 3 katas

2 Dan: 5 katas

3 Dan: 7 katas

4 Dan: 10 katas

It’s time to celebrate Ken Wa Kan Kendo Dojo 3rd Anniversary!

Thank you for supporting Ken Wa Kan during the past year. Because of you, Ken Wa Kan is able to continue serving our community, while sharing our Kendo knowledge and spirit with our friends. I hope Ken Wa Kan will continue our original goal which is to help more people interested in studying and discovering the true spirit and beauty of Kendo.

Welcome Shozo Kato Sensei to visit Ken Wa Kan on Friday, July 24th (7:30~9:30 PM)

It's our honor and pleasure to welcome Shozo Kato Sensei, Kendo 7th Dan Kyoshi, Iaido 7th Dan Kyoshi, to visit Ken Wa Kan on July 24th, Friday, 7:30~9:30 PM.

Kato sensei is the head instructor of Shidogakuin, and one of the highest ranking U.S. practitioners of both Kendo and Iaido. Kato sensei also was the head coach for Team-USA at 10th and 11th World Kendo Championships.

If you are planning to attend the practice, please arrive dojo, dress well, and be ready by 7:20 PM. Thank you.

  • Kyu Do Kan at Scarsdale, New York is closed for two months. It will reopen after Labor Day weekend. Kyu Do Kan at Fort Lee, New Jersey still opens for practice through out the summer.

Kendo demonstration at Japanese Summer Festival, Japanese House & Tea Garden tomorrow

Tomorrow, we are going to have a Kendo demonstration at Japanese Summer Festival, Japanese House & Garden, Philadelphia Fairmount Park held by Shofuso and the Japanese Association of Greater Philadelphia on Saturday, June 20th, 2009.

We plan get together at 12:30, and the demo shall start at around 1:10 PM or 1:15 PM.

Ms. Bella Church who is the camp and Shidogakuin manager told me the fee will be less if any KWK students would like to attend and will NOT stay on campus. Let me know if you are considering to attend, or have any question.

We're saddened over the loss of a great martial arts teacher.

We are sorry and saddened to share with you that grandmaster Thomas J. Wilson, 8th dan taekwondo black belt and 5th dan hapkido black belt, owner of the Black Belt Academy passed away on March 7, Saturday morning.

Master Wilson was a life fighter, and had been battling leukemia since autumn of 2007. He is in a better place now and will be truly missed by all.

Please join with us to include Master Wilson and his beloved wife and children in our prayers.

Thomas J. Wilson will have a Christian burial service at St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church (Route 100 in Upper Uwchlan) on Thursday, March 19 at 10:00am. A celebration of his life will resume following the church service at Ludwigs Corner's Griffith Hall (fire hall). Participants will have the chance to publicly share something about Master Wilson at that time if they so choose. If you wish to lend a hand, please bring a dessert to share.

For Families of the Black Belt Academy: On Friday, March 20 at 7 pm, a special memorial candlelight service will be held at the dojang for those who participate in the childrens' classes. The children and their parents are invited to attend. Classes will resume on Saturday.
