Ni Kyu: Rebecca, Joe, Anthony, and Yuko
Yon Kyu: Yu-Wen, Nicole
Go Kyu: Liz
Congratulations to everyone!
Also, I would like to thank you for your supports to Ken Wa Kan in the year of 2008! It's been such a wonderful year for our dojo. In 2008, we have been through many excellent Kendo events together- 1st Friendly Tournament, Yu Sensei's visit from Taiwan, demonstrations at several occasions, AUSKF Championship at Las Vegas, AEUSKF Tournament in New York, Baltimore Tournament, EUSKF Shinsa, visited other dojos, invited Senseis and kenshis to Ken Wa Kan, and of course, many happy hours like Yang sensei's New Year's party, Kelly's Holiday party, and our dojo's Anniversary party...etc.
Even though we have achieved some goals, there are a lot more to be pursued. I wish in this coming new year of 2009, we can work and train together to make Ken Wa Kan become a more cheerful and wonderful place and family for everyone to study the Art of Kendo!
Again, Thank You so much for your support and hard working! Wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year of 2009!

AUSKF Kendo Promotional Exam Study Guide: Expections of Rank
Kendo Promotional Exam Study Guide
Expectations of Rank
6th-kyu through 2nd-kyu:
can be awarded at the dojo level depending on the regional federation. Other federations formally test for these grades and some have age restrictions for children. 1st-kyu and above
are done through the formal examination process. While it is normal to have both adults and children testing for the same level of kyu there can be a great deal of difference in the basic skills between the adults and children. Most often the children have been doing Kendo much longer and have much better basics than the adults. However when the mental maturity of the adults is factored in this should not be a problem. An experienced examiner will understand this kind of situation and grade accordingly. (see attachments for skill guidelines used by some regionals)
1st-kyu requirements:
enter and leave the court properly, strike with ki-ken-tai-ichi, good energy and 1 or 2 yuko-datotsu.
Shodan:
same as above with nidan waza included. Nidan: demonstrate the use of shikake waza, harai waza, debana waza, hiki waza, and oji (oh-ji) waza. Obviously the occasion may not arise to use most of the mentioned waza, but the candidate should show better basics than the Shodan level and be able to use more advanced technique as above. The Kenshi at this level should not be obsessed with the use of waza but start to master the opportunity of attack. Cuts should have good vertical motion with the use of both hands and te-no-uchi.
Sandan:
Use seme and ken-sen to initiate attacks and have sharp waza. Particularly the use of oji type of waza should be incorporated in the candidates Kendo.
Yondan:
should display very solid Kendo and kamae, display mastery of a variety of techniques, yuko-datotsu, excellent footwork and posture. An attacking kamae full of spiritual energy should be displayed rather than a waiting kamae that reacts to the opponent.
Godan:
starting with the Godan examination the candidate must truly exhibit the use of seme and ken-sen to create the moment of attack. Often failure is caused by the candidate doing shiai style of keiko and trying to win points. One must demonstrate the control of the center, the opponents spirit, and mastery of the footwork and shinai. The Kendo must be logical without unnecessary strikes and actions. The strike is followed by zanshin that is true mental alertness.
Rokudan:
the same as Godan, but even more, the ri-ai must be demonstrated. Strong control of the center, efficient use of waza and footwork, mental control of the opponent and situation.
Nanadan:
all aspects of the previous ranks must be present and an essence of dignity that speaks to quality Kendo. This dignity shows both on and off the court in the persons life.
Kodansha Kendo is not only just winning a strong shiai, strong keiko or beating an opponent in the shinsa. You must express your Kendo with the correct kamae, strong ken-sen, reasonable ma-ai, smooth flowing footwork, body movement and a strong, smooth stroke in your strikes. This must be performed in one rhythm with sharp te-no-uchi.

Kendo in High Speed Camera(Slow Motion)
During shiai, points are scored in the blink of an eye but it takes more than being the faster competitor to score a clean hit. The shimpan look for how well a kenshi sets up the opportunity to score and how they react to the situation as this video illustrates. I'm working on a more detailed translation of what the narrator says but the subtitles convey most of the pertinent information. This video is from the most recent All Japan Kendo Championships and the winner, Shoji Teramoto, is a graduate of the International Budo University and the first IBU alumni to win the title.

Shinai Maintenance
With Yu Sensei's impending visit, now is a good time to brush up on your shinai maintenance skills. Be sure to check your shinai regularly for splinters/splitting, tighten the nakayui (leather strap) and tsuru (string), and rotate the slats if necessary. Here is a brief video that goes over many of these steps.

Interesting Kendo Video
David shares with us a very interesting and educational video. Here is his message:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Sensei,
I came across this video that shows how a hand-made shinai is made and it's produced by the same people who made the video detailing how a set of bogu is made. Below is a rough translation of each of the subtitles as they appear.
http://sc-smn.jst.go.jp/8/bangumi.asp?i_series_code=B070601&i_renban_code=237
On the right you'll see three options to play the video. One for Windows Media Player and two for Real Player.
0:20 How A Shinai is Made
0:27 The shinai, used in kendo, is made of bamboo and part of the equipment developed towards the end of the Edo period (1603 - 1868).
0:37 A shinai is made of 4 slats of shaped bamboo.
0:49 A shinai is generally 3 shaku and 9 sun long, which is equal to 118 centimeters. (Handle, center/balance point, and tip)
1:03 These are bamboo trees that will be used to make a shinai.
1:13 This is a prepared section of two-year-old bamboo.
1:25 One bamboo section is split into 6-8 slats.
1:35 The rough shape of the slat is cut using a small cleaver-like knife.
1:57 Width shaping.
2:05 Using a hand plane, the sides of all four slats are smoothed.
2:27 Straightening
2:32 The bamboo is placed over a gas flame.
2:40 The heat from the flames make the bamboo fibers soft.
2:51 "Straightening" is the bending and twisting of the bamboo to give the correct shinai shape.
3:03 A "straightening block" is used to shape the slats.
3:25 Before straightening.
3:30 After straightening.
3:35 It is clear how straight the slats are now that the bends and twists have been corrected.
3:48 Molding.
3:58 The edges on the outer side of the slats are cut to a rounded shape.
4:19 The same is done on the inner sides.
4:50 A plane is used to shave the inner sides to a 45 degree angle.
5:11 Each pass towards the tip makes very thin shaves.
5:26 The 45 degree angle of the inner sides allows all for slats to stay securely together.
5:43 (left) After molding (right) before molding.
6:19 Surface Correcting
6:27 Both sides of each slat are shaved to center the outer skin.
6:45 A file is used on the node of the slat.
7:17 A tool called a kaki is used to smooth the edges of the slats after shaving.
8:00 An electric sander is used to smooth the entire slat.
8:16 A hard shark skin is used to further polish and smooth the slats.
8:39 All four slats are secured and bound with string.
9:28 A steel plate is placed inside the tsuka (gripping end) to ensure that the slats do not move.
10:01 The slats are then placed on top of of a "shakudai" (measuring board) and any extra length is cut off the tsuka.
10:19 A rotating sander smooths and rounds the tsuka.
10:52 The tsuka area is shaved down.
11:25 A round plane is used to smooth down the entire tsuka.
11:46 Sandpaper is used to futher smooth the tsuka.
12:04 A hot brand is used to label the shinai.
12:26 The shinai is then fitted with a tsukagawa made of cow leather and a plastic stopper underneath the tip cover, also made of cow leather.
12:35 The sakigawa (tip cover) and the tsuka are secured to each other with a string (tsuru).
12:48 And this is what we receive as the finished product.
The end.
David
