EUSKF Tournament Parking Infomation

There are two parking options:

Westtown School Main entrance- 975 Westtown Road, West Chester, PA 19382. If you enter school from the Main entrance, this parking lot is a little farther from the gym- about 5~8 mins walking distance. Saturday should be a nice day, and then it is good to walk and get some fresh air.

For Main Entrances (Admissions Office/Upper School): Take Route 202 South to the Westtown Road Exit. At the bottom of the ramp/traffic light, make a left and head east on Westtown Road for approximately 2.5 miles. The main entrance os on the left.

There is another entrance, East Entrance where has a larger parking lot, and it's closer to the gym.

For East Entrance (Lower and Middle Schools/Open Houses): Take Route 202 South to Route 3 East/Newtown Square Exit. Stay on Route 3 East for approximately 2 miles. The road will go down a hill and at the bottom will be a traffic light at Westtown Way. Make a right onto Westtown Way and take the first left onto Walnut Hill Road. Continue to the second stop sign and make a right into the East Entrance.

We will put "KENDO TOURNAMENT" signs at both Main & East entrances, and please follow the "KENDO PARKING" signs while you enter the campus. After you park the car, please follow "KENDO TOURNAMENT" signs again to the gym.

2010 Shidogakuin Youth/Collegiate Tournament & Visitor from Westtown School Exchange Student

There were 11 students from Penn State University Kendo Club and 5 members of Ken Wa Kan West Chester attended the 17th Annual Shidogakuin Youth/Collegiate Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 21, and the shimpan seminar on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Congratulations to Mr. Steve Cheney from Ken Wa Kan-PSU Kendo Club won the 3rd place at the Individual Division-19 years old and up Mudansha at the tournament!

Besides Steve's victory, many of our participants moved to 2nd, 3rd, 4th matches, or even quarter finals at the individual division games. Congratulations to them as well.

Steve always attends our West Chester classes and the practices in Hershey whenever he can during the school breaks. He works hard at helping the PSU kendo club and his own kendo study. We thank Dr. Gingrich's teaching and hard working, also some PSU senior students' help to make this club running well and getting stronger everyday. I am looking forward to seeing this kendo club growing.

Yesterday evening, Feb. 23, we had a kendo 3-Dan visitor, Miss Kozue Sasaki from Japan who is a current short-term exchange student at Westtown High School. We had a very nice practice session with her, and we welcome her to come back to our class during her stays in the US.

1. How to pass the promotion test (Seminar)

What: The Sample 4th Dan and Kyu Promotion Test Seminar.
When: Sunday, January 31, 2010 (1:00 p.m: Godo Keiko; 3:00 p.m: Promotion test seminar).
Where: Ken Zen dojo (4 blocks from the World Trade Center site in Manhattan) located at 54 Thomas St., New York, NY 10013.

Where: Greenville Elementary School Gym, 100 Glendale Rd., Scarsdale, NY 10583

Time to Gather: 12:30 P.M.

Shinsa to Begin: 1:00 P.M.

Shinsa Fee: $30.00 per applicant

For the Shinsa fee please make check payable to EUSKF and submit it, along with the application form (provided below) properly filled-in, to Ishizuka-sensei no later than a week before the day of Shinsa (by November 7, 2009), or to Han-sensei on the day of Shinsa if you had a good reason why you could not hand it in before that date.

Those who pass the Shinsa must pay the Menjo fee shown below, in order to receive Certificate issued by AUSKF. The check should be made (after announcement of your advanced grade) payable to EUSKF, and submit it to Ishizuka-sensei, or to the head instructor of your dojo.

Masashi Shikai sensei (kendo kyoshi 7th Dan) will be with us on the day of the shinsa and we will have a joint kendo practice together with him after shinsa. There is no extra fee to pay for the practice and everybody is welcome to participate. Those people who do not take test, but want to join kendo practice should come to Greenville Elementary School gym by 3:30 pm. Most of sitting judge sensei are going to participate in this joint kendo practice.

We're saddened over the loss of a great martial arts teacher.

We are sorry and saddened to share with you that grandmaster Thomas J. Wilson, 8th dan taekwondo black belt and 5th dan hapkido black belt, owner of the Black Belt Academy passed away on March 7, Saturday morning.

Master Wilson was a life fighter, and had been battling leukemia since autumn of 2007. He is in a better place now and will be truly missed by all.

Please join with us to include Master Wilson and his beloved wife and children in our prayers.

In 2008, we have been through many excellent Kendo events together- 1st Friendly Tournament, Yu Sensei's visit from Taiwan, demonstrations at several occasions, AUSKF Championship at Las Vegas, AEUSKF Tournament in New York, Baltimore Tournament, EUSKF Shinsa, visited other dojos, invited Senseis and kenshis to Ken Wa Kan, and of course, many happy hours like Yang sensei's New Year's party, Kelly's Holiday party, and our dojo's Anniversary party...etc.

Even though we have achieved some goals, there are a lot more to be pursued. I wish in this coming new year of 2009, we can work and train together to make Ken Wa Kan become a more cheerful and wonderful place and family for everyone to study the Art of Kendo!

We welcome friends from Ken Zen, NY/NJ to visit Ken Wa Kan.

On Thursday, Dec. 11th, there will be Song Sensei, 5-dan, Son Sensei, 4-dan, Mr. Kim, 2-dan, and Mr. Kwon, 1-dan coming to our dojo.

Song sensei is the Individual Champion at 3-dan and above Division at Baltimore Tournament this year. These four kendokas were Ken Zen Team-A members who won the 1st Place at Team Division at the Tournament as well. Also, Mr. Kwon received the Kento Sho (the best spirit award) at the Tournament.

Please do your best to attend the class, meet new friends, and learn from visiting senseis and kenshis.

Expectations of Rank

6th-kyu through 2nd-kyu:
can be awarded at the dojo level depending on the regional federation. Other federations formally test for these grades and some have age restrictions for children. 1st-kyu and above
are done through the formal examination process. While it is normal to have both adults and children testing for the same level of kyu there can be a great deal of difference in the basic skills between the adults and children. Most often the children have been doing Kendo much longer and have much better basics than the adults. However when the mental maturity of the adults is factored in this should not be a problem. An experienced examiner will understand this kind of situation and grade accordingly. (see attachments for skill guidelines used by some regionals)

1st-kyu requirements:
enter and leave the court properly, strike with ki-ken-tai-ichi, good energy and 1 or 2 yuko-datotsu.

Shodan:
same as above with nidan waza included. Nidan: demonstrate the use of shikake waza, harai waza, debana waza, hiki waza, and oji (oh-ji) waza. Obviously the occasion may not arise to use most of the mentioned waza, but the candidate should show better basics than the Shodan level and be able to use more advanced technique as above. The Kenshi at this level should not be obsessed with the use of waza but start to master the opportunity of attack. Cuts should have good vertical motion with the use of both hands and te-no-uchi.

Sandan:
Use seme and ken-sen to initiate attacks and have sharp waza. Particularly the use of oji type of waza should be incorporated in the candidates Kendo.

Yondan:
should display very solid Kendo and kamae, display mastery of a variety of techniques, yuko-datotsu, excellent footwork and posture. An attacking kamae full of spiritual energy should be displayed rather than a waiting kamae that reacts to the opponent.

Godan:
starting with the Godan examination the candidate must truly exhibit the use of seme and ken-sen to create the moment of attack. Often failure is caused by the candidate doing shiai style of keiko and trying to win points. One must demonstrate the control of the center, the opponents spirit, and mastery of the footwork and shinai. The Kendo must be logical without unnecessary strikes and actions. The strike is followed by zanshin that is true mental alertness.

Rokudan:
the same as Godan, but even more, the ri-ai must be demonstrated. Strong control of the center, efficient use of waza and footwork, mental control of the opponent and situation.

Nanadan:
all aspects of the previous ranks must be present and an essence of dignity that speaks to quality Kendo. This dignity shows both on and off the court in the persons life.

Kodansha Kendo is not only just winning a strong shiai, strong keiko or beating an opponent in the shinsa. You must express your Kendo with the correct kamae, strong ken-sen, reasonable ma-ai, smooth flowing footwork, body movement and a strong, smooth stroke in your strikes. This must be performed in one rhythm with sharp te-no-uchi.

Fairly recently I found Kenshi247.net, a fantastic kendo blog that discusses many of the more esoteric and philosophical ideas behind kendo. Some discuss the history of kendo, personal revelations, various events, and translations on thoughts from famous sensei.

This particular post was written by Fujii Minoru sensei, Shihan of the Hokkaido College Kendo Federation, during his visit to Kenshikan in Melbourne, Australia. Quite a long read and very detailed so read it over in sections to digest the material.
